Peanut/Tree Nut Policy
The Montessori School of Northampton strives to be a "peanut/nut-safe" school. ("Nut" refers to both tree nuts and peanuts, which are legumes.) Towards this goal, some classrooms are designated as "nut-free."
In nut-free classrooms, the school will work with children and their parents to understand nut- free procedures. These procedures include students not bringing for lunch or snack, any item containing any peanut or nut product, including peanut and nut butters, oils, extracts and flours. Insofar as information is available on the label of school-provided snacks, the school will furnish snacks for these classrooms that do not purport to contain any peanut or nut products; in addition, school snacks for these classrooms will not include any food that poses a risk of cross-contamination (i.e., baked goods from a bakery or home kitchen; any food whose label includes warnings that the food was processed on equipment or in facilities that also process nuts or peanuts).
Outside of nut-free classrooms, teachers of every classroom will work with children and parents to understand nut-safe practices throughout the school (e.g., cleaning hands and tables before and after eating snacks and lunches).
For school-wide celebrations, bake sales and other events, parents will be asked to provide only foods that are peanut-free (e.g., no peanut-butter cookies, noodles with peanut sauce) and tree nut-minimized (e.g., brownies or cookies without nuts). Parents who bring food to these events that are dairy-free, wheat-free or nut-free will be asked to label them.
